By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Premier League of Belize champions Verdes are with their backs against the wall on Sunday when they face Altitude at 3:00 pm in the semifinals of the Premier League of Belize’s Opening Season at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio.
In Game One, Altitude defeated Verdes 1-0 at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence on Saturday, December 2. That 1-nil lead has Altitude with the edge as they visit the Green Machine.
Altitude only need a draw to qualify for the finals. In fact, even if they lose, they might still have a chance of making it to the finals.
The way it stands, Verdes have to defeat Altitude by two goals to qualify directly to the Finals. A 1-0 Verdes win, forces extra-time and possibly penalties. However, if they win by one goal but Altitude score (say 2-1, 3-2, 4-3, and so on), Altitude qualify by virtue of the away goal(s).
After falling 1-0 to Altitude in the first leg at Independence, PLB Champions and regular season leaders Verdes have their backs against the wall. Verdes need to win by two goals to qualify for the Finals. Altitude only need a draw. Their second leg match is set for Sunday at 3:30 pm at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio. Due to the poor lighting at the Norman Broaster should extra time and penalties be required, the match was set for a half-an-hour earlier start.
In the other semifinal, Port Layola face Progresso at 4:00 m at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex in Belize City. Port have the edge as they defeated Progresso 2-1 on Saturday, December 2, in Orange Walk.
According to the PLB championship regulations, at the end of both games, the team that has the greater aggregate score advances to the finals. Should both teams have equal points, equal goal difference and equal number of goals scored, the team with the greater number of goals scored away advances to the finals. The PLB said that if both teams also have equal number of away goals, the series will be decided by extra time and penalties if necessary.
Extra time consists of two 15-minute periods. If the score is still tied after extra time, penalty kicks will be taken to decide the winning team. The penalty kicks will be 5v5 using the International Football Association Board’s (IFAB) kicking order. If the score is still level, penalty kicks will then be 1v1 until a winner is decided.
For the Finals, the team with the better aggregate score wins the championship. In the case of an even aggregate score, the away goals don’t count, and the series goes to extra time and penalties if necessary to determine the champions.
