By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A one-day training on Fusarium TR4, a fungus that threatens banana crops worldwide, was held on Friday, December 8, 2023, at the Orange Walk Agriculture Station in Yo Creek.

The training was organized by the International Regional Organization for Health in Agriculture (OIRSA), the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (Taiwan ICDF), the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA), the Banana Growers Association (BGA), the University of Belize, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).

The participants were farmers from Guinea Grass, San Estevan, August Pine Ridge, and Yo Creek.

The aim was to raise awareness and promote biosecurity measures to prevent and control the spread of Fusarium wilt, a disease caused by Fusarium TR4.

“The need for robust biosecurity measures is paramount to impede its spread,” MAFSE said.

“Strict protocols, including controlled access to affected areas, disinfection procedures, and the adoption of disease-resistant banana varieties, are essential to safeguard plantations.”

The participants learned how to identify the symptoms of Fusarium wilt, such as wilting, yellowing leaves, and vascular discoloration, and how to implement the control protocols, such as controlled access, disinfection procedures, and the use of disease-resistant banana varieties.

At the end of November, OIRSA, Taiwan ICDF, BAHA, the BGA, and MAFSE attended an International Forum on Fusarium Tropical Race 4 (TR4) and Banana Bunchy Top virus in Guatemala.
