‘Tis the season for contraband’ – BAHA on the lookout

Posted: Tuesday, December 12, 2023. 9:22 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: As Belizeans flock to Chetumal, Melchor and points further away to buy items for Christmas, some may take the less wholesome route to bring them home.

According to the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA), there have been several confiscations of illegally imported shrimp, fruits, vegetables, and meats in recent weeks.

The Authority says it is increasing surveillance in association with sister agencies during the Christmas season and reminds that “illegal to import any products regulated by BAHA without the required permit. Such importations violate the BAHA Act, Chapter 211 of the Laws of Belize, and will result in charges and/or legal action.”

If you have any questions contact the various BAHA departments – Food Safety Services, Belize City: 223-4457/4794; Plant Health Department, Central Farm: 824-4873; Animal Health Department: 824-4872 or Quarantine Department: 824-4899 or visit the website at www.baha.org.bz.
