By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Under-20 Belize Men’s National Team (U20 BMNT) lost its fourth preparation match for the CONCACAF U20 Men’s Championship Qualifiers falling to the U20 Guatemala Men’s National (U20 GMNT) 3-1 on Thursday, December 14, in their second friendly in three days.

Captain Devin Garbutt (#5) scored Belize’s lone goal off a superb header to tie the game at 1-1 at the Guatemalan Football Federation’s High Performance Center (Centro de Alto Rendimiento – CAR) in Guatemala City. Guatemala scored two more to win the match.

The game was an improvement to Tuesday’s when the U20 BMNT lost 5-0 against the U20 GMNT at the Pinula Contreras Stadium in Santa Carina Pinula.

Thursday’s game was on natural grass as opposed to the artificial turf they played on at the Pinula Contreras Stadium, Thursday Match at the CAR will be on natural grass.

The U20 BMNT and Guatemala are preparing for the CONCACAF U20 Men’s Championship Qualifiers to be held in Nicaragua in February/March 2024.

Last month, the U20 BMNT fell twice to Honduras; 1-0 at San Pedro Sula on Tuesday, November 28, and 3-0 at Siguatepeque on Thursday, November 30.

The U20 BMNT’s four friendly matches are part of the preparation for the Concacaf U20 Qualifiers in which Belize is participating along with 26 other countries, including Guatemala and Honduras. CONCACAF has split the 27 countries into six groups to qualify for the Concacaf U20 Championship.

The U20 BMNT will be playing in Group A, which will play the qualifying round robin in Managua, Nicaragua from February 23 to March 3, 2024. Belize will be facing Cuba, British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, and hosts Nicaragua.

So far, Guatemala have played eight preparation matches out of which they’ve won seven and lost one.

The Technical Staff that guided the U20 BMNT in Honduras and Guatemala is directed by Head Coach Dale Pelayo, who holds a Concacaf Coaches’ B License, and consists of Assistant Coach Norman Koko (B License Coach), Fitness Coach Dennis Serano (B License Coach), Goalkeeper Coach Stanley Reneau (C License Coach), Physiotherapist Aba Ben, Kit Manager Peter Jones, and Team Chaperone Tyrone Young (Muschamp).
