By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Ministry of Agriculture along with International Regional Organization for Plant and Animal Health (OIRSA), Taiwan ICDF, BAHA and the Banana Growers Association joined forces to conduct a 1-day training on Friday, December 08, 2023.
The training was held at the Orange Walk Agriculture Department.
The collaborative initiative specifically targeted farmers from Guinea Grass, San Estevan, August Pine Ridge, and Yo Creek, underscoring a shared commitment to combat the Fusarium oxysporum Tropical Race 4 (TR4) threat.
Fusarium wilt, propelled by Fusarium TR4, poses a significant global peril to banana crops.
The need for robust biosecurity measures is paramount to impede its spread.
The Ministry noted that strict protocols, including controlled access to affected areas, disinfection procedures, and the adoption of disease-resistant banana varieties, are essential to safeguard plantations.
Early detection is key, recognizing Fusarium TR4 symptoms such as wilting, yellowing leaves, and vascular discoloration. The fungus disrupts crucial water and nutrient transport, jeopardizing the plant’s health.
Proactive monitoring and swift response are imperative to manage Fusarium TR4’s impact and preserve global banana production.
