By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Port Layola are hunting for their first Premier League of Belize championship but the Belize City side are playing handicapped without their leading goalscorer Gilroy ‘Bredda’ Thurton who is out for the next six to eight months, probably more, with a fractured right ankle.

Thurton, who plays as a wing-forward fractured his ankle in the last semifinal match against Progresso on Sunday, December 10, at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex in Belize City, and missed the first Final which Port drew 0-0 with Altitude on Saturday in Independence. And he will miss the definitive Final this coming Sunday and more.

“Two Progresso players sandwiched him and fell on his ankle,” Port Layola Manager Leaton St Claire said.

“I killed the ball,” Thurton said. “When I killed the ball Tinoco kicked me down, then the next player dropped on my foot. That’s when I heard the crack.”

“I couldn’t even walk when I got the injury. I came out of the game right away.”

An X-ray at Belize Medical Associates on Monday, December 11, confirmed the fracture, the club reported.

“This will be a good six to eight months, maybe up to a year” Thurton told Breaking Belize News.

“This is a serious injury. I will sit out all of next season. Maybe even more.”

Thurton explained that the upper part of his right ankle was fractured. At the moment, Thurton is waiting for the swelling to go down for his foot to be put in a cast. He said for the time being his foot has a ‘backing’ for support and in two weeks time he will have the cast put on.

Prior to this injury, Thurton said he had only suffered hamstring injuries.

Thirty-year-old Thurton has been playing in the Premier League of Belize for several years now.

“I played for Verdes,” he said.

“I left Verdes and went to Wagiya, San Pedro Pirates, FC Belize, and now I’m at Port Layola.”

Thurton has also had several stints with the Belize Men’s National Team starting first with the U20 and moving up to the ‘A’ team at 20.

Thurton comes from a footballing family being the nephew of Allie Thurton, who starred for Kulture Yabra when the Belize City team was in its heyday, and for the Belize Men’s National Team as a tough defender.
