Tyrone Meighan fined $125 for tearing up a $2.00 currency note

Posted: Monday, December 18, 2023. 9:22 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: He has been accused of all manner of crimes up to and including aggravated assault and being a member of a gang, and nearly always has managed to beat the charge. But a rash act during a police station visit at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic finally put a conviction on the rap sheet of Tyrone Meighan, one of the notorious Meighan brothers of Banak Street.

Meighan was charged with mutilating a currency note in October of 2020 when, at a police station in Belize City, he ripped up a $2 currency note in front of police officers, one of whom recorded him on video doing so.

Meighan and attorney Bryan Neal appeared in court today, more than three years later, where Meighan entered a guilty plea. He was fined $125 and cost of court for the offence.

On October 10, 2020, around 2:45 a.m., police picked up Meighan pending an investigation of a complaint of extortion. At the station, he was given an acknowledgment form but refused to sign it and began behaving disorderly inside the cell block.

An officer told Meighan to remove his property from his pockets and he removed an amount of cash. He continued acting boisterously and using profanity and the female Sergeant of Police in charge began to record him on her cell phone.

Meighan was then asked to count his money only to begin ripping up the bill – mutilation of currency notes is an offense under the Central Bank Act. The ripped-up bill, no longer legal tender, was retrieved in pieces and labeled as an exhibit in a white envelope.

Because he saved the court time by pleading guilty, Meighan was fined half of the maximum $250 fine for the offense, which he must pay by January 31, 2024, in default a week behind bars.
