Won’t be home for Christmas – Mainland Chinese man denied bail on Immigration charge

Posted: Tuesday, December 19, 2023. 2:22 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Mainland Chinese national Jun Yu, 48, has had a rough go of it since illegally arriving in Belize in June – and his stay has now been extended into the New Year.

He will be spending Christmas at the Central Prison on remand pending trial on the charge of being a prohibited immigrant after serving time for illegal entry.

Yu is accused of having had insufficient funds to remain in Belize for the 30 days period he claimed he would have been in Belize for.

In court Yu was provided partial disclosure and will be given the rest by January 2, 2024, with a trial expected to start shortly thereafter. But the Magistrate declined bail for Yu after finding that his chosen sureties did not demonstrate that they knew him long enough to stand bal for him.

Back in June, Yu illegally entered Belize through the Mopan River but was caught and pleaded guilty in court to illegal entry. He was fined $1,000 in the San Ignacio Magistrate’s Court but was unable to pay and so was put behind bars for three months, plus an additional month spent trying to raise funds for a plane ticket back home.

When he did so he left Belize for Panama on October 20, but the airline sent him back days later, saying there were discrepancies in his ticket purchase – the flight was from Belize to Panama City, then to Istanbul, Turkey and ultimately Guangzhou, China
