UDP condemns vandalism allegedly orchestrated by PUP in San Ignacio and Santa Elena

Posted: Wednesday, December 20, 2023. 2:31 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has issued a statement condemning acts of vandalism allegedly orchestrated by the People’s United Party (PUP) Mayoral Candidate, Mathew Preston.

The UDP says that sometime around 7:40 last night, the party was informed about several “blatant acts of vandalism in which four political banners were vandalized by PUP operatives.”

In addition, the UDP noted that the vandals were caught in the act.

The UDP claims that the vandals confessed that they were hired by the PUP mayoral candidate, Mathew Preston, who gave them specific instructions to remove the UDP banners and replace them with those of the PUP.

“The UDP condemns this criminal act and calls upon San Ignacio Police to act swiftly and bring the perpetrators to justice. We have called on all UDP supporters to refrain from any retaliation and let us give the authorities the opportunity to arrest and charge those responsible for these illegal and unnecessary but deliberate acts. We have obtained evidence, videographic and otherwise, that provides substantiated proof showing that operatives of the PUP were responsible for these acts,” the UDP expressed.

The UDP also says that the PUP Mayoral candidate Matthew Preston was questioned regarding the act of vandalism and in the presence of Mayor Earl Trapp and the UDP Vice Chairman Alberto August, he agreed to refrain from further acts of vandalism and to re-deploy the banners that were illegally taken down.

But the UDP claims that the banner in San Ignacio was not replaced to its original location and another banner next to the Police station was subsequently vandalized.

The UDP further called on the Prime Minister, the Minister of National Security, the Commissioner of Police and the Officer in Charge of the San Ignacio Police formation to “act swiftly and decisively to punish those responsible and to set the necessary parameters in place to ensure that there is no repeat of these illegal acts.”
