Leader of the Opposition visits former Governor-General on Christmas Day

By Aaron Humes: Leader of the Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) Moses “Shyne” Barrow spent part of his Christmas Day with former Governor-General of Belize Sir Colville Young.

The men share a love of music, with the former Governor-General noted for compositions including “Old-Fashioned Christmas” which he played for Barrow on piano.

Sir Colville also participated in politics as a former candidate for the House of Representatives in what is now the Mesopotamia division, before turning to a career in academia and writing up to his 1993 appointment as Governor-General. He retired from the post in 2021, succeeded by Dame Froyla Tzalam.

Barrow wrote, “I treasure the contributions Sir Colville has made to our Nation in Arts, Education, Politics and as the longest serving [representative of the] Head of State for four Prime Ministers over 28 years.”
