Over 100 riders register for Krem’s New Year’s Day Cycling Classic

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: More than 100 cyclists have signed up to compete in the first race of the 2024 cycling calendar, the 33rd Annual Krem’s New Year’s Day Cycling Classic, on Monday, January 1.

G-Flow’s Derrick Chavarria, American John DeLong, LA Sweat’s Kaya Cattouse, and Rolling Shattaz Tyler Tejeda who won the Elite/Under 23, Masters, Women’s, and Junior categories this year, are aiming to repeat on Monday.

The Cycling Federation of Belize (CFB) said 75 riders have signed up for the Elite, U23, & Masters Categories, four have registered for the Women’s race with the possibility of a foreign rider, and 25 riders have entered the Men’s Junior/Youth Category.

Two foreign riders, Americans DeLong and Dante Young, are competing in the Elite/Masters Categories and one rider is expected to still join the Women’s Classic. DeLong is no stranger to Belize cycling. He has been racing in Belize for umpteen years. Young is a Miami Blazers’ teammate of Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Champion Oscar Quiroz

The CFB said registration of border town riders from Mexico and Guatemala is still pending.

The Krem Classic covers a 96-mile course on the Philip Goldson Highway starting at the Belize-Mexico border and heading to Belize City where it finishes on Central American Boulevard by the Belize City Civic Center.

The Women and Junior riders cover 52 miles from Orange Walk to Belize City with the same finish line.

Riding for Team FAL, Chavarria won the 2023 edition in three hours, 54 minutes, and 48 seconds (3:54:48). Delong, who was sixth in the General Classification, won the Masters in 3:55:40. Cattouse controlled the Women’s Classic finishing solo in 2:55:26. Tejeda won an eight-man sprint to claim the Junior Race in 3:02:10.
