By Rubén Morales Iglesias: San Ignacio-Santa Elena (SISE) Mayor Earl Trapp reported on Thursday evening that the SISE Town Council carried out alleviation work in flood prone areas affected by the recent rains in Santa Elena, Mosquito, and Cahal Pech.

“We did what we could have done to alleviate the situation,” Mayor Trapp said in a statement posted on social media.

“Next week our cement crew will conduct a more permanent solution. I sincerely empathize with the people that had water flow into their houses and caused inconvenience.”

Trapp said that a grant the San Ignacio-Santa Elena Town Council applied for through the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) five years ago was approved. He said a feasibility study is being conducted and will be completed by September 2024.

“Subsequent to that construction of most needed upgrade of our drains will commence,” Mayor Trapp said.

“Thanks to GCF (Green Climate Fund) for their generous donation and thank you for your patience.”

According to the Government of Belize Press Office, the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) is a regional organization that “assists government departments and agencies, as well as private sector agencies in CARICOM member states, in accessing GCF funds for climate adaptation and mitigation project grants”. The CCCCC has been accredited by the GCF as a Regional Implementing Entity and carries out GCF-approved projects.

Mayor Trapp said San Ignacio-Santa Elena now has a population of 28,000.
