By Aaron Humes: Following a meeting on Wednesday, the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) has issued a statement of support for the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA) in its ongoing dispute with Belize Sugar Industries Limited (BSI).
While not strictly speaking a trade union, the BSCFA and NTUCB said in a joint statement that they have reached consensus on “a collective approach and strategic actions” in response to individual issues affecting each of their members.
The Association and the Congress plan a formal declaration and plan of action in response both to issues of national importance and their specific concerns.
And concerning the issue of the moment – the continued impasse over a commercial agreement – the Congress condemns BSI/ASR’s Open Agreement policy as “a divisive and undermining attempt at commandeering the sugar industry” which they say they will not accept.
The Belize Workers Union (BWU) which represents BSI/ASR workers was not in evidence at Thursday’s protest walk nor was any other Union, but they may make future appearances together including a reported joint press conference sometime today.
