Man who brandished gun at grandmother’s funeral released on bail

By Horace Palacio: Brandon Gillett, 38, a licensed gun owner who brandished an AR15 rifle at his grandmother’s funeral, has been granted bail by the High Court. Gillett, who had been remanded in prison over the Christmas period, was released on a $10,000 bail late Thursday evening, as ordered by Justice Antoinette Moore.

The incident, which occurred at a family funeral, involved Gillett using his licensed .223 rifle to intimidate relatives. This act of brandishing the weapon led to his arrest and subsequent remand.

Gillett’s bail hearing took place virtually, with him appearing from a cell block at the Belize Central Prison. His attorney, Orson “OJ” Elrington, also participated in the hearing virtually. The decision to grant bail came without opposition from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) office, and Gillett was released under standard bail conditions.

The case took a turn last week when Gillett attempted to plead guilty to modifying his licensed rifle. However, he did not agree with all the facts presented in the case, leading to complications in the legal proceedings.
