By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize (PLB) 2023-24 Closing Championship will kick off with a re-edition of the Opening Season Championship featuring the clash between Champions Altitude and Subchampions Port Layola at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence on Saturday, January 13, 2024.

A PLB source said the schedule was not planned to have the top two PLB Opening Season clubs face off in the first fixture as it was drafted long before the two teams reached the Final.

Two other matches will play on Opening Day. Progresso FC will host Benque Viejo United at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk and Police Benque (Club Deportivo Benque) will match up against Wagiya at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen.

All three games start at 7:30 pm.

The lone Sunday game will feature Subchampions Verdes against Bandits Sports at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio at 4:00 pm.

The Regular Season should be completed by Sunday, April 28, 2024. The entire championship should be over by May 12 to meet the deadline to submit to Concacaf the name of Belize’s representative to the Concacaf Champions Cup.

If one PLB club wins both Opening and Closing Championships, that team represents. If two champions emerge, the champions with the higher Cumulative Table points get the ticket to the regional competition.

Currently, Altitude are the frontrunners as 2023-24 Opening Season Champions. They will represent if they win the Closing Championship. If they don’t repeat as champions, they still have a shot since the champions with the higher Regular Season Cumulative Table points qualify to the Concacaf Champions Cup.

At present Verdes (29), Port Layola (27) and Progresso (24) have more accumulated points than Altitude (23). But the champions have more than Benque Viejo United (22) and Benque Police (16).

Bandits (8) and Wagiya (4) have no chance of surpassing Altitude should they win the Closing Championship.
