By Aaron Humes: This evening around 6:20, the blockade of vehicles erected by members of the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers’ Association (BSCFA) in Buena Vista, Corozal District, was lifted after a roughly six-hour standoff.
According to Minister of Agriculture Jose Mai who addressed the Association’s general membership meeting, Prime Minister John Briceno is in contact with the principals of American Sugar Refining (ASR) concerning the counter-proposals of the BSCFA, and a response from them either way should be forthcoming by noon on Wednesday.
Mai, joined by Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, appealed to the farmers to respect their fellow travelers and move aside for now.
The Commissioner said that this turn of events was a surprise after decent behavior through last week by cañeros, but that the Department was prepared to move them by force as a last resort.
