By Aaron Humes: The blockage of the Philip Goldson Highway at Buena Vista, Corozal, by members of the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers’ Association (BSCFA) following their emergency general meeting has been roundly condemned by fellow associations.
The Progressive Sugar Cane Producers Association (PSCPA), Corozal Sugar Cane Producers Association (CSCPA), and Northern Sugar Cane Growers Association (NSCGA) remind that they have valid commercial agreements with Belize Sugar Industries Limited/American Sugar Refining (BSI/ASR) since 2021, and have been delivering produce since the official start of the crop on December 28.
If the blockage continues, the association says, “it prevents our farmers from their constitutional right to deliver their produce to the mill.”
And so it calls on the Government and relevant authorities to ensure that they can proceed unimpeded to Tower Hill and reiterate that they have been acting responsibly and recognize the importance of the industry to their members and the overall northern districts and the nation.
Reports say the BSCFA intends to continue its blockade for the time being.
