Commissioner of Police suspects truck busted with 200 sacks of sugar was destined for Guatemala

Posted: Friday, January 5, 2024. 9:22 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Thursday morning, authorities in Orange Walk busted a truck carrying 200 sacks of sugar.

It is suspected that the sugar may have been destined to leave the country.

During an interview with 7News Belize, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams says that police have interviewed 2 Guatemalans who claim the sugar was destined for Independence.

“We are currently investigating and we have confirmed that the sugar was purchased from BSI by a person and that person subsequently sold the sugar to the Guatemalans. So, we are awaiting word from the sugar board as well as the Minister of Agriculture, to decide what is going to become of the sugar. According to the persons in whom possession it was, they are saying that it was destined for Independence but I don’t buy that crap. Certainly, we believe that it was destined to be taken out of the country,” Williams stated.

Meanwhile, Belize continues to experience a sugar shortage.
