International News: Some relatives of kidnapped migrants in Mexico paid ransoms

Posted: Friday, January 5, 2024. 1:43 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Saturday, December 30, 2023, armed masked men stopped a bus where migrants were traveling in and abducted 32 migrants in Reynosa, Mexico.

Reports indicate that on Wednesday, the abductors freed the migrants and left them in the parking lot of a shopping center in Rio Bravo, Tamaulipas.

Mexico’s Security Minister Rosa Icela Rodriguez has since indicated that some of the migrants’ families paid ransoms to the criminals that kidnapped them.

“They took photos and in the early morning of December 31, the kidnappers called the families to ask for money. In some cases, deposits of a part of the required resource were made,” Rodriguez said.

Six of the migrants were from Honduras and 26 were Venezuelan, with three having dual nationality with Colombia.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador rejected speculation that police had been involved in the kidnapping, saying the allegation that has circulated in local media was aimed at undermining the work of security forces.

Migrants in Mexico frequently say they are extorted by local police and federal authorities as they journey to the U.S.-Mexico border.
