Posted: Saturday, January 6, 2024. 7:12 am CST.

By Horace Palacio: The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government, under the chairmanship of His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana and Chairman of CARICOM, convened for the Seventh Meeting on the situation in Haiti. This assembly focused on discussing the ongoing crisis in Haiti and determining further supportive actions for a Haitian-led resolution.During the meeting, the Heads received an update from the CARICOM Eminent Persons Group, acknowledging the vital efforts underway to reach a political consensus among various stakeholders in Haiti. The meeting also reviewed the status of preparations for the Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission, recognizing Jamaica’s pivotal role in coordinating CARICOM’s efforts and the crucial contributions made by Ministers of Foreign Affairs in this regard.

The Heads expressed grave concerns about the worsening security and humanitarian conditions in Haiti, emphasizing the dire consequences of the prolonged political and security crises. Notably, the increasing violence in Haiti has led to thousands of deaths and displaced hundreds of thousands from their homes, significantly impacting the country’s most vulnerable populations.

In response to these alarming developments, the Heads urged all parties in Haiti to make concerted efforts to reach a political solution urgently. They emphasized the need for implementing a transitional roadmap that would lead to stability, facilitate humanitarian support, ensure the holding of credible elections, and restore political and institutional legitimacy. The roadmap is also seen as a crucial step towards achieving long-term development for the Haitian people.

CARICOM reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside the people of Haiti and all relevant stakeholders to foster lasting peace and sustainable development. The Community also expressed its anticipation for enhanced cooperation and coordination with international allies in supporting Haiti through this challenging period, underscoring the importance of global solidarity in addressing the crisis.
