By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) is currently engaging in consultations, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), to draft the Seed Policy.
This initiative follows the recent completion of the first draft of the Belize National Agriculture and Food Policy 2024-2034, conducted under the supervision of FAO and MAFSE.
Recognizing the pivotal role of the Seed Policy in the development and transformation of the agricultural sector, both policies align with the five (5) strategic policy pillars.
The ongoing consultation sessions facilitate collaboration among key stakeholders to shape a comprehensive and effective Seed Policy.
Participating in the consultation session were representatives from Seed Importer and Distributors, Belize Agricultural Health Authority, MAFSE technical staff, and Chief Agriculture Officer, Dr. Victoriano Pascual.
The objective of the session was to present findings and gather feedback, emphasizing the importance of this information in shaping the final Policy document.
Another consultation session is scheduled that will focus on engaging grain producers to ensure a well-rounded and inclusive approach to the development of the policy.
The consultation initiative is part of the Technical Cooperation Program 3901 Belize Agriculture Sector Policy, with a specific focus on Seed, Back Yard Poultry, Marketing, and Indigenous Territories.
Funded by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in collaboration with the Government of Belize, this program aims to contribute to the development of National Agriculture Sector Policies and an Implementation plan.
Spearheading the consultation process is Ina Sanchez.
