International News: Mexican President apologizes for calling trans lawmaker ‘man dressed as a woman’

Posted: Tuesday, January 9, 2024. 1:56 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador apologized for reportedly calling a transgender representative of his political party, “a man dressed as a woman”.

Shortly after his comments were made, LGBT activists called out the President for the remarks.

Over the weekend, the Mexican President met with Salma Luevano, one of the first trans people to become a federal lawmaker.

However, when asked why he greeted Luevano at a public event with a kiss on the cheek, Lopez Obrador referred to Salma as a “man dressed as a woman.”

Following the backlash, the Mexican President apologized.

“I want to… offer an apology to a colleague who identifies as a woman,” President Lopez Obrador said.
