International News: Ecuador declares war on armed gangs following attack on TV Station LIVE

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Following days of violence and an attack on TC Television station in Guayaquil, Ecuador, President Daniel Noboa has ordered that criminal gangs be “neutralized.”

On January 9, 2024, armed masked men entered TC’s studio and forced staff to the floor. The TV station was LIVE and the video of the attack on social media showed journalists pleading for their lives.

Police in Ecuador later made 13 arrests.

And 10 people have been killed since a 60-day state of emergency began in Ecuador on Monday, BBC reports.

The State of Emergency was declared after notorious cartel leader ‘Fito’ escaped from his prison cell.

‘Fito’ is the leader of the Los Choneros drug cartel.

President Noboa said on Tuesday that an “internal armed conflict” now existed in the country and he was mobilising the armed forces to carry out “military operations to neutralise” what he called “transnational organised crime, terrorist organisations and belligerent non-state actors”.
