By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: In just the first 3 days after El Salvador opened overseas electronic voting for the first time, a record-breaking 51,226 Salvadorans living abroad have voted.
The overseas vote is expected to favor President Nayib Bukele who won by a margin of over 600,000 votes in the last elections, the Associated Press reports.
President Bukele is favored to win the elections with Salvadorans hailing him for security measures, a boost in tourism and projects including the new National Library.
After a year-long crackdown on gang violence, Bukele has gained massive popularity in the country since Salvadorans are able to work, operate businesses and enjoy their country freely without fear of gang violence.
The amount of Salvadorans who already voted electronically is 12x the number of people who voted outside of the country in the entire 2019 presidential elections, when only 3,808 Salvadorans living abroad voted.
The surge in overseas voting underscores the increasing political importance of the Salvadoran diaspora to Bukele as he seeks to hold onto power in the upcoming elections on February 4.
