International News: President of Ecuador challenges criminals, “Be brave, fight the soldiers”

Posted: Thursday, January 11, 2024. 10:34 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: President of Ecuador Daniel Noboa has challenged criminals in the country to fight the soldiers during a radio interview.

The 36-year-old president, who has only been in power for 2 months, challenged the gangs.

“Be brave, fight the soldiers,” he said.

President Noboa said that the criminals should take on the military rather than civilians, BBC reports.

On Monday, President Noboa declared a state of emergency after a wave of gang violence and the prison escape of drug cartel leader ‘Fito’.

In the most dramatic incident, armed men stormed a TV station and threatened the staff during a live broadcast.

Since then, over 300 suspects have been arrested under the state of emergency.

President Noboa said Ecuador was living through “a very tough moment” but insisted that his government would be tough on the gangs and “any judges or prosecutors who back these gangs”.
