On George Price Day, exhibit of speeches open in Orange Walk

By Aaron Humes: On what would have been his 105th birthday, late Prime Minister and Father of the Nation Right Honourable George Price still speaks to us through a collection of his speeches given while Premier of Belize.

The “Let Belize Live: Speeches of the Premier” collection opened this afternoon in Orange Walk Town at the Banquitas House of Culture, after opening in Belize City last year and traveling elsewhere in the country.

At official ceremonies, Minister Ramon Cervantes Jr recalled, “For Belize, Price lived his life. For our peace, Price made the sacrifice. For our freedom and prosperity, Price paid the price.” It was his work that made Belize what it is today – “we are all the sons and daughters of George Price,” according to Cervantes, who also credited him with helping to developing the sugar industry by making it easier for farmers to own and work their land.

Colleague and Minister of Agriculture Jose Mai also referenced the testy situation resolved a week ago, reiterating that it was Price’s design his People’s United Party follows – everyone working together, small and large, to build a nation together.

PUP Chairman and Minister of the Public Service Henry Charles Usher, Price’s grandnephew, gave the keynote in place of Prime Minister John Briceño and Education and Foreign Affairs Minister Francis Fonseca, both away in Guatemala. He recalled Price’s childhood – a deep Christian faith, a belief in Belize as a nation, and a conviction that better must come.

“Love, which is the constant theme of Saint John the Divine, is fundamental to our Christian democracy, because without love, our government and our Belizean way of life would be neither Christian nor democracy,” Price told graduates of Muffles College in a speech titled “Become Nation Builders.” As quoted by Usher, he added that Belizeans wish, want, and do what is best for their fellow man – recognizing God and living by his teachings, and transferring that relationship to our fellows – that this is central to the Belizean identity.

The Party normally lays wreaths at Price’s grave on the date of his death – September 19, observed as National Service Day during the September Celebrations.
