By Aaron Humes: In what was clearly not a good look for the Belize Police Department as officers on Saturday morning were seen participating in an attempt to evict an elderly woman from her Belize City home.

Gertrude Hunter told LOVE News that she received the call about officers coming to her home on Cemetery Road while out on errands on Saturday. She returned to find the locks on her doors broken and various belongings on the sidewalk. According to Hunter, the property in question was left to her by her late common-law husband in his will, but his family is contesting the property.

Today Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said that this is not standard operating procedure for the Department: “I must say that when I heard it, I was extremely displeased…Truth be told, in circumstances of such nature, I would not have the Police engage in such activity. If there is a court order to evict a person, the police would normally just accompany the persons to whom the eviction notice is given, and that person would be the one to remove items from the home; the Police must only be there to ensure that law and order is maintained during the process, but not to participate in the eviction themselves.”

The Commissioner added that he was not even sure what type of document was being executed and it is procedure that the Legal office in Belmopan must receive a copy of all such documents and proceed to offer guidance to the responding officers. He said he would inquire with Officer Commanding Eastern Division, Assistant Commissioner Hilberto Romero, as to exactly what transpired.

The Commissioner also noted that some officers were working for private individuals against his specific orders and warned that he would be looking into that as well.

The officers left Hunter’s residence without finishing the eviction and they have not returned since, according to Hunter.
