Police to destroy 901 firearms in next phase of weapons management training

Posted: Monday, January 22, 2024. 7:46 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes, Belmopan: The Belize Police Department is preparing to destroy more than 901 firearms in the next week.

It is part of continuing management of the Police’s weapon stocks as well as eliminating dangerous, obsolete, and unserviceable weapons recovered from the public, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police Bart Jones.

Training was provided on weapons management and storage to representatives of the Police, Belize Defence Force, Customs and Excise Department, and Belize Coast Guard and facilities storing those weapons will be upgraded.

Funding was provided by the CARICOM IMPACS project and the British High Commission in Belize through the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office. Representing the former, Callixtus Joseph made note that Belize has further to go in reducing gun violence, including eliminating gang-related crime, addressing the gender gap that places men as both victim and perpetrator; denormalizing violence in the public sphere; addressing the funding of social programs alongside law enforcement and fixing the criminal justice system.

Other speakers highlighted the importance of partnership across the Caribbean to address the provenance and use of firearms.
