By Aaron Humes: The University of Belize (UB) has issued thanks to Prime Minister John Briceño; Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance Senator Christopher Coye, and Minister of Education Francis Fonseca for deciding to exempt gratuity paid to University faculty and staff from taxes under the Income and Business Tax Act.
The decision is promulgated in Statutory Instrument 19 of 2024, which expands the list of public statutory bodies whose employees’ gratuities are exempt from taxes.
Designated faculty representative on the University Board, Timothy Dami, called the move “progressive” and said that it “will be of great benefit and boost the morale of the Faculty and Staff of UB.”
Per President of the University of Belize, Dr Vincent Palacio, the national university employs 138 academic and 326 administrative and support staff across its three campuses and other academic centers, serving nearly 5,000 students countrywide.
