International News: Guatemala’s Attorney General refuses to resign after campaign against new president

Posted: Wednesday, January 24, 2024. 1:29 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Guatemala’s Attorney General Consuelo Porras indicated that she will not resign.

Porras, senior prosecutor Rafael Curruchiche and Judge Fredy Orellana were at the forefront of judicial efforts to stop President Bernardo Arevalo from taking office.

They are all listed as corrupt and undemocratic by the U.S. government, and Arevalo had said one of his first actions as president would be to ask Porras to resign.

After Arevalo won the Presidential elections last August, Porras and her office launched an investigation into his Semilla party.

The raiding of electoral offices prompted massive protests and road blockades in Guatemala.

However, Arevalo enjoyed strong support from the international community after being duly elected.

Arevalo took office on January 15 after a nine-hour ceremony delay.

Now, Porras posted to social media that she fully intended to “fulfil the constitutional mandate of four years… and consequently I will not resign.”

Porras, 70, was appointed in 2018 by then-president Jimmy Morales and to a second four-year term by his successor Alejandro Giammattei in 2022.

Porras also insisted the public prosecutor’s office was an “autonomous and independent institution” and did not answer to the government.
