By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Recently, Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Economic Development, Dr. Osmond Martinez met with representatives from the Natural Capital Project at Stanford University, USA.

The team is on a mission trip in Belize from January 29-31, 2024.

Attendees also included representatives from the Climate Finance Unit, the Blue Bond & Finance Permanence Unit and the Inter-American Development Bank.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss a pilot project being launched in Belize to secure and monitor Belize’s Natural Capital, as well as the project’s vision for monitoring, reporting and verification to unify different agencies and inform research needs.

The Ministry noted that the new initiative will build on Belize’s success with blue finance and use natural capital approaches to benefit both its people and nature, by expanding on its use of innovative finance mechanism for cabon credit and green bonds.

CEO Martinez is looking forward to further collaboration between Stanford University and local Universities in Belize.
