Government of Belize Press Release

In a significant milestone for the residents of San Antonio Village, Toledo, the Belize Social Investment Fund (BSIF) and the Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour and Local Government officially handed over a water meter and expansion project to the community. This landmark achievement aims to improve water management and efficiency and ensure equitable distribution of water resources.

The project addressed the water supply needs of the San Antonio community and saw the implementation of 396 house service connections, bringing clean potable water directly to the households.

Key aspects of the project included the installation of 5,500 linear feet of transmission and distribution lines. A high-performance water meter was installed to accurately measure and monitor water usage. The system also incorporated 10 air release valves to regulate air in the pipelines and ensure efficient water flow. Twenty-two valve inspection boxes were strategically placed for easy access, facilitating the maintenance of the water distribution system.

In addition to the infrastructure enhancements, capacity-building initiatives were implemented. Waterboard operators underwent training on water meter reading, as well as the usage of barrel locks and barrel lock keys.

The planning and execution of the project were conducted adhering to the highest standards of quality, ensuring the reliability and sustainability of the San Antonio Village Water Supply System. The total investment for this project, provided through funding from the CARICOM Development Fund, amounted to $184,321.87.

The handing over event was attended by dignitaries including the Hon. Oscar Requena, Minister of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour, and Local Government; Mr. Carlos Tun, Executive Director for the BSIF; Mr. Daniel Coc, Chairperson for the San Antonio Village Council; Mr. Alvaro Pop, Chairperson for the San Antonio Water Board; and other council members.
