By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Top seeded Gwen Lizarraga High School boys crushed fourth seeded Sadie Vernon 7-0 on Wednesday in the first leg of the semifinals in the Central Secondary Schools Sports Association (CSSSA) Football Competition at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex in Belize City.

Sadie Vernon held up well in the first half only allowing Calvin Thurton’s goal in the 12th minute, before succumbing to the Gwen Liz pressure again in the last minute of the half when Jaymer Bradley found the net for a 2-0 lead.

Gwen Liz returned with more pressure in the second half pushing Sadie Vernon into their own half and increasing the lead to 3-0 in the 56th minute when Damion Vernon shook the net.

Again Sadie Vernon held the fort for another quarter of an hour, but the pressure was too much forcing the floodgates open in the last ten minutes when Raymond Gentle scored a brace in the 80th and 90th minutes. Esmond Sanker in the 85th and Jonathan Garay in the 87th completed the onslaught.

Gwen Liz now got into the second leg on Saturday with an insurmountable 7-0 lead heading to the Finals next week.

In the Girls Championship semifinals, top seeded Gwen Liz beat Saint Catherine 6-2 on Wednesday.

The playoffs continue on Thursday at 4:00 pm with second place Wesley College facing third place Pallotti High School in the Girls Championship followed by second place Wesley College against third place Saint John’s College in the Boys Championship.
