By Aaron Humes: A Belize City man charged with making death threats and who was not attending his court cases, must be evaluated by a psychiatric doctor.
Santos Isiah Martinez, resident of Antelope Street Extension, appeared on a bench warrant for non-appearance in court.
Martinez was arraigned on October 25, 2023, on a charge of threat of death against a woman tenant at Laura Dunn Street. But he had not showed up in court since being granted bail and so the court also sent a warrant for his surety to appear in court.
In court he said he had been told that the matter would be adjourned at his last appearance.
His father, Felipe Martinez, then told the court that his son has a mental illness but could not offer proof. But the Magistrate decided on having him evaluated when the younger Martinez began talking about having “inner voices” speaking to him.
The bench warrant was cancelled and Martinez was allowed to go home in the care of his father. He is to visit the Port Loyola Clinic to sit with the psychiatric doctor, who is to report to the court on his mental state before the case can proceed.
Martinez is out on bail of $800 plus one surety of the same amount which his father signed for him.
