By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Just like in the regular season, second seeded Wesley College and third seeded St John’s College (SJC) drew 1-1 in the first leg of the semifinals in the Central Secondary Schools Sports Association (CSSSA) Football Competition at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex in Belize City on Thursday.

SJC jumped ahead in the 32nd minute after Avery Vassell nailed the opposing goal, but Wesley bounced back rather quickly, tying the score in the 40th minute on a goal by Carlos Lopez for the final 1-1 draw.

When they first met in the first round of the tournament, they played to a 2-2 draw. The third time they meet on Saturday in the second leg of the semifinals, one of them will have to win even if they have to go to extra time or a penalty- shootout. Their match will be the last of the day and one of them will emerge as one the two finalists. Their match should kick off at around 3:00 pm.

In the other semifinal, Gwen Lizarraga High School ran over Sadie Vernon 7-0 on Wednesday.

In the Girls Championship semifinals, top seeded Gwen Liz beat Saint Catherine 6-2 on Wednesday while Wesley College defeated Pallotti High School 8-1 on Thursday.

All return legs play on Saturday starting at 9:00 am at the Marion Jones (See schedule below).

Should any of the series end up in a tie, extra-time and penalty-kick shootouts will determine the winners on Saturday.  Judging from the results in the first leg, only Wesley-SJC may need an extension.

The Finals and Third Place games will be played next week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday.
