Belize Electricity Limited responds to power outage late on Wednesday

By Aaron Humes: A sudden interruption of power supply hit all of Belize but the Corozal District out starting from 11 p.m. Wednesday.

This afternoon, Thursday, Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) reported in a statement that a protective shield wire that protects the transmission line from lightning strikes, located at an installation in the Orange Walk District, made contact with the line.

While Belize had access to the Mexican electricity supply as that outage is only taking place during daytime hours, BEL said it only used local and renewable energy sources and restored power to affected areas between one to three hours after the outage, finishing around 2:19 a.m. Thursday. Orange Walk District stayed offline until 3 a.m. to allow the BEL repair team to locate and fix the equipment on the transmission line.

BEL has apologized for the inconvenience and thanked customers for their patience and their workers for responding to the emergency.
