Woman is charged with theft, common assault and damage to property of a chair at Police substation

By Aaron Humes: A rash attack at a Police Sub-Station has led to criminal charges for a resident of Holy Emmanuel Street, Belize City.

26-year-old Shantel Alvarez was charged with theft, common assault and damage to property for separate incidents. She is accused of stealing a Samsung A3 cell phone valued at $210 belonging to Lennox Lorenzo on February 4, and further that she assaulted Lorenzo and caused damage to a green plastic chair valued at $30, property of the Government of Belize, while at the Mahogany Street Police Substation.

Lorenzo told police that Alvarez visited his house on Sunday night while he was talking with another friend. He had left the cell phone on his sofa, and when he came back inside, she began questioning him and asking for his phone password.

He refused to tell her and she stayed at the house overnight, then allegedly took the phone with her the following day. She was apprehended later on and when he went to the station to make his complaint, he saw her there and asked for the phone. She continued to insist she had not taken it and their war of words resulted in Alvarez allegedly throwing the chair at him.

In court, she pleaded not guilty to all three charges and was released on bail of $1,500 subject to not contacting or interfering with Lorenzo or his family members and reporting to the substation every Friday. She returns to court on April 3.
