By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A four-day advanced training program for MAFSE extension personnel and technicians on how to operate, manage, and maintain cover structures ends on Friday.

The program, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) in collaboration with the CARICOM Development Fund (CDF), was conducted at the University of Belize Central Farm Campus.

Twenty-five technicians from various organizations such as the Ministry of Agriculture, the Belize Agricultural and Health Authority (BAHA), the Pesticides Control Board (PCB), the University of Belize (UB), and the Sugar Industry Research and Development Institute (SIRDI) attended the program which started on Tuesday.

“The primary objective of the training program is to empower MAFSE Extension Personnel and Technicians with the necessary expertise to effectively manage, operate, and maintain protective structures,” MAFSE said in a statement.

“Moreover, the program seeks to facilitate the dissemination of cutting-edge technologies to the farming community utilizing covered structures.”

The training program is part of the Covered Structure and Capacity Enhancement Project valued at US$348,678 and implemented by MAFSE is supported by the CDF and the Government of Belize.

MAFSE said the Covered Structure Project expects to achieve positive results by using covered structures for alternative farming methods. These results include better crop quality, longer production cycles, higher yields, and less use of harmful pesticides.

MAFSE said the ultimate goal is to increase the supply of vegetables in the local market, especially those grown under cover structures, and to raise income levels and improve the quality of life of the participating farmers.

According to the Agriculture Ministry, the initiative shows the Government’s strong commitment to improving agricultural production strategies that are resilient and sustainable.
