St John’s College win 3rd place in CSSSA Boys Football Championship in penalty shootout over Sadie Vernon High School

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: St John’s College (SJC) staged a remarkable comeback against Sadie Vernon High School in the third-place match of the Central Secondary Schools Sports Association (CSSSA) Boys Football Championship at the Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City on Saturday. The match ended in a thrilling penalty shootout after SJC won the game 4-2 in extra time tying the aggregate score at 5-5.

SJC took an early lead through Marco Nunez in the 12th minute, but Sadie Vernon equalized before the break with a goal from Raheem Martinez in the 37th minute. SJC needed to score two more goals to cancel out Sadie Vernon’s 3-1 advantage from the first leg, and they did so with Avery Vassel and Jareth Tablada finding the net in the 57th and 69th minutes respectively.

That gave SJC a 3-1 regulation win, but the aggregate score tied at 4-4, the match was stretched into extra time,

Sadie Vernon were not ready to give up and scored a crucial away goal in the 99th minute of extra time through Rogel Lemmoth, putting them ahead 5-4 on aggregate. However, SJC responded with a late goal of their own in the 120th minute by Nunez just before the final whistle to level the aggregate score at 5-5 and force a penalty shootout.

SJC showed more composure and accuracy from the spot, winning the shootout 3-2 and securing third place in the competition.
