By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Globally, February 11 is celebrated as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

The theme this year is “Women and Girls in Science Leadership, a New Era for Sustainability.”

At the Belize National Forensic Science Service, 42% of all staff are women, and over 50% of all current improvement projects to advance forensic science in Belize are being spearheaded by Belizean Women.

“Today, and everyday, we celebrate our women colleagues and look to them for continued leadership to achieve Belize’s Sustainable Development Goals,” the Belize National Forensic Science Service noted.

Even though women have made tremendous progress towards increasing their participation in higher education, they are still under-represented in these fields.

The United Nations note that although Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields are widely regarded as critical to national economies, so far most countries, no matter their level of development, have not achieved gender equality in STEM.
