By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Benque Viejo United (BVU) are atop the Premier League of Belize standings, at least momentarily, after beating Wagiya 3-1 at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen on Saturday night.
Colombian Sebastián Vergara opened the scoring in the 57th.
However, Wagiya responded nearly immediately, tying the game in the 61st on a goal by Oziel Martinez.
But another Colombian, Sebastián Valencia put BVU ahead 2-1 in the 69th minute.
Jahryl Smith converted the third goal in the 77th to seal the 3-1 win for the home standing Benque Viejo United.
With 13 points to their credit, BVU moved up to the top spot over Verdes who have 12. However, Verdes play against Police Benque (Club Deportivo Benque) on Sunday and can regain the lead with a draw on a victory.
Wagiya remain in seventh place with three points.
In the other game on Saturday, Port Layola blanked Progresso 2-0 in Orange Walk.
On Friday, defending champions Altitude dumped the Belmopan Bandits 4-1 in Belmopan.
The only remaining Week 5 game, between Verdes and Police Benque kicks off at 4:00 pm at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio on Sunday.
