Belizean national and American woman killed amidst suspected drug dispute in Tulum

Murder in Corozal

Posted: Monday, February 12, 2024. 5:28 am CST.

By Horace Palacio: A tragic incident at a beach club in Tulum claimed the lives of a Belizean man and an American woman, as reported by ABC News. The event, which unfolded on Friday night, is thought to have originated from a conflict among drug dealers, say Quintana Roo state prosecutors.

The Belizean individual, whose name has not been released, was discovered with cocaine and pills. This discovery has led authorities to suspect his involvement in narcotics distribution. The American woman, also deceased in the incident, was determined by prosecutors to have had no ties to drug trafficking, indicating that she might have been an innocent bystander caught in the violence.

Speculation by local media suggesting that the victims were a couple has been dismissed by Mexican prosecutors, who cited photographic evidence of the Belizean man with another woman.

Mexican authorities have pinpointed suspects related to the shooting and are actively searching for them. This incident is a continuation of a worrying pattern in Mexico’s Caribbean beach resorts, where foreign tourists have increasingly become collateral damage in confrontations linked to drug gangs. Tulum, celebrated for its breathtaking beaches and ancient Maya ruins, has been particularly impacted by such violence.

In 2021, Tulum witnessed another fatal shooting that resulted in the deaths of two tourists: a California travel blogger of Indian descent and a German national, both caught in the crossfire of a dispute between competing drug factions. Following these events, the U.S. State Department issued a travel warning last year, urging travelers to be more vigilant, especially after dark, in popular destinations such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.

Authorities in Belize have yet to issue any information regarding this incident.
