First ‘e-taxis’ to be rolled out to downtown operators in Belize City

Posted: Tuesday, February 13, 2024. 11:31 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Taxi operators in downtown Belize City will have an opportunity to participate in the Belize City Council’s E-Mobility plan, in which they can lease-to-own electric-powered cars in a set time period.

The first two e-taxis were delivered last week and two more are on the way. Each costs $56,000.

This afternoon, according to Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner, he will be meeting with the Downtown Taxi Association to discuss plans to offer the first four e-taxis under a financial agreement which will take into account profit, prices for consumers and return for the Council.

The Mayor said it has been taking a while to get both electric buses and taxis to Belize, in conjunction with international lenders and so dismissed charges of “electioneering” made by opponents.

More on this later on.
