By Aaron Humes: 61-year-old Gertrude Hunter was distraught outside Magistrate’s Court on Monday after facing four criminal charges following her eviction from her residence at number 49, Cemetery Road, Belize City.

Hunter was charged with damage to property, two counts of aggravated assault of two female police officers and trespassing in premises. She is accused of separate confrontations on January 13 and 14 and February 10 in which she is alleged to have assaulted a constable and Inspector of Police, damaged the former’s cell phone, and trespassed, having no such business there, at number 49 Cemetery Road, the private residence of Pauline McFadzean.

She pleaded not guilty and made bail of $1,000, returning to court on March 18.

Outside court, Hunter told her side of the story, which she said began in 2015 and worsened in 2020 after the passing of her common-law husband Benjamin Ferguson, 82.

Hunter told our court reporter that the property was left to her in Ferguson’s will and that this is being contested by his relatives including two adopted daughters and a step-daughter (he had no biological children). She said further that she lived on the property with Ferguson between 2003 and 2015. She claims the relatives removed Ferguson from the property at that time and sequestered him from her until his death.

Hunter further says she lost her Social Security benefits from Ferguson’s passing and rent collection from the garbage in the yard. Her reports against her ex-relatives appeared to have gone nowhere.
