By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On February 16, 2024, the Ministry of Rural Transformation inaugurated vital upgrades for Hopkins Water Board.

Minister of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour, and Local Government, Oscar Requena was joined at the inauguration by Minister of Youth, Sports, and Transport, Rodwell Ferguson and Charlton Rodriguez, Chairperson for the Hopkins Water Board and Macario Augustine Jr, Chairperson for the Hopkins Village Council.

The Ministry noted that with the leadership of Charlton Rodriguez, Chairperson of the Hopkins Water Board, significant strides have been made to enhance the quality and accessibility of water within the village.

Over the last 2 years, achievements include:

A second production well provided by the Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, operates as a backup well to help the rural water system in pumping water throughout the village.

$60,000 Invested in the acquisition and installation of a generator, ensuring uninterrupted operation even in challenging circumstances.  This investment demonstrates an unrelenting commitment to community well-being.

Acquisition of essential vehicles, including a $15,000 truck and three motorcycles worth over $7,000, to facilitate efficient operations and service delivery.

Strategic investment in infrastructure and construction, securing 15 acres of land for well drilling for $5000.00 and building an expansion to the pump house to house the generator worth more than $7,000.  These enhancements are proactive steps for long-term sustainability.

The Water Board has also expanded its staff, from a single member to a dedicated team of seven, ensuring seamless operations and outstanding services.

A new billing system, meter repair room, and surveillance system have been installed at the Water Board office, as well as a surveillance system at the Pump House Station.

The final but critical achievement is debt clearance, which the water board acquired when they entered office in 2021 and effectively settled approximately $58,000 in arrears to Belize Electricity Limited, demonstrating fiscal responsibility and prudent management.

The Ministry says that the inauguration represents the continuation of sustainable water management and community prosperity.

“We applaud the Hopkins Water Board for their great diligence and dedication to accountability, management, and providing valuable services,” the Ministry noted.
