By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Muffles College Bobcats clinched the National Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) Boys Football Championship on goal difference over Delille Academy at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga on Saturday.

The Bobcats started out in unstoppable fashion routing Belmopan Baptist High School 6-1 on Thursday and then blasting Gwen Liz 7-0 on Friday, but ran out of gas losing 1-0 to Delille on Saturday.

This was the first year the NSSSA held a three-day round robin. Normally, the championships have been two-day events with semifinals on the first day and the final and third place games on the second day. A number of teams, including Muffles, struggled to maintain their stamina and endurance throughout the three days.

“With trophy in hand, and after three days of intense football competition in Dangriga, we can now say that we are the Official National Male Football Champs of the National Secondary Schools Sports Association of Belize!!” Muffles College said in a social media post on Saturday.

“We are Bobcats!! We encourage you to come out and cheer and support our Varsity Team as they enter Orange Walk later tonight since they are traveling back home from Stann Creek.”

Despite playing at home, Delille stumbled on opening night Thursday falling 3-2 to Gwen Liz but bounced back defeating Belmopan Baptist High School 3-1 on Friday before taking down the eventual champions on Saturday.

However, Muffles’ +11 goal difference, from 13 goals scored against two allowed, was far superior to Delille’s +2 from six in favour and four against.

The Muffles Bobcats were led by San Pedro High School reinforcement Keedenshaay Bowen who led all scorers with seven: three against Belmopan Baptist and four against Gwen Liz. Bowen was voted the Most Valuable Player of the NSSSA Championship. The regional champions are each allowed three reinforcements from other high schools within their regions.

Belmopan Baptist totalled three points and finished third on their win over Gwen Liz. They had lost their first two games: 6-1 to Muffles on Thursday and 3-1 to Delille on Friday.

Gwen Liz also totalled three points but lost the third place to Belmopan Baptist on goal difference: -10 to -3 (See ranking table below.)

Muffles College coaching staff (L to R): Assistant Coach Enrique Vargas, Head Coach Kenny Witzil, and Sports Director Gilbert Cummings.
