By Aaron Humes: Police on the Burrell Boom-Hattieville Road came under fire Sunday night after responding to a report of persons traveling on a bus with a firearm.
According to police, they set up a vehicular checkpoint at Mile 15 near the roundabout on the George Price Highway, but they spotted a vehicle identified as a white Geo Prizm going through the road behind the gas depot and diverting away from the checkpoint.
They set chase and the pursuit continued up the Burrell Boom Road toward the Central Prison, where the Prizm stopped near a sign for a no parking zone. As the policemen left their own vehicle, their quarry began opening fire from the passenger side. Police returned fire but no one was injured. The police mobile was damaged to the passenger side windshield and front bonnet.
The shooter re-entered the vehicle and set off toward Burrell Boom with police still in pursuit. However, after passing the Burrell Boom Bridge the officers lost sight of the car and they were not able to warn their colleagues in Ladyville to set up to try to catch the culprits.
Investigations into the incident are underway.
