By Aaron Humes: Though it appears he has since changed his mind, a report by Reno Castillo has led to charges for Wenjing Lei, 30, businessman of Perez Road, Ladyville, Belize District.

Lei has been charged with the use of deadly means of harm and wounding for allegedly shooting at Castillo in front of his uncle’s store in Belama Phase 2, Belize City.

ACP Hilberto Romero says the shooting stemmed from an altercation that happened outside of the store: “On Sunday the 18th of February 2024 around 3:00 p.m. Police responded to a shooting incident at a store in Belama. Upon arrival, they found Reno Castillo who was seen with a gunshot injury to the foot. The investigation is that Reno Castillo was at the store outside when there was an altercation and at some point, a Chinese national who was inside the store fired one shot which caught Reno Castillo in the foot. He was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, treated and released…”

Lei today appeared before a Senior Magistrate with attorney Richard “Dickie” Bradley, who informed that the complainant, Castillo, was present to address the court on the matter.

It appeared Castillo wanted to drop the charges but the Magistrate wanted his statement in writing as there was no instruction to the court to have the charges withdrawn. After an adjournment until 2 this afternoon, the court still did not have any information as to how to proceed and so Lei was remanded without bail due to the nature of the offense. He returns to court on March 1.

Lei has the right to apply for bail to the High Court, but he may not have to as we understand that Castillo has given a further statement to police in which he wishes for no further court action; however, that instruction has not been forwarded yet to the court.
