By Aaron Humes: Seas of blue, red, and a few other colours have taken over the streets of the two cities and seven towns in Belize as candidates are officially nominated for the forthcoming municipal elections due on the first Wednesday in March.

This morning the People’s United Party (PUP), incumbents in all nine municipalities although not in the majority in one of them, made their marches to the respective nomination centers to be nominated. They currently hold 65 seats and 8 mayoralties.

In his native Orange Walk, Prime Minister John Briceño said the work has been done for all to see and objective voters will select his party for another three years in office after making the comparison to the Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP).

Further north in Corozal, Rigo Vellos hailed the energy and excitement of his supporters as he went to the Magistrate’s Court to be nominated with a mostly unchanged team, and hoped that momentum would continue for the next two weeks.

Here in Belize City, Bernard Wagner is going for an unprecedented third term in office and told reporters he was gratified to see today’s support. But he added that he would not display overconfidence, stay humble and rely on the party’s machinery to get his 11 over the line.

Wagner noted that multiple disasters and emergencies have blighted this second term – from COVID-19 to hurricanes and flooding, but his City Hall has been resilient and the work has been put in.

This afternoon, independent and third-party nominees will be taken, most notably from the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) in Belize City and Belize Progressive Party (BPP) in Punta Gorda Town, followed after that by the UDP, who are aiming to use the election as a springboard to return to national prominence after a near wipeout in elections in 2020 and 2021.

Opposition Leader Moses “Shyne” Barrow hammered home his party’s message of ending what they see as the “dysfunction” at municipal level and malaise at the national level by sending a strong signal to the PUP that change is coming soon.
