Belize Agricultural Health Authority increases surveillance activities to control contraband vegetables

Posted: Thursday, February 22, 2024. 9:35 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) has issued an advisory that there is increased surveillance to control contraband activities.

The Extension Service of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Mobile Interdiction Team – MIT of the Ministry of National Security and the Customs Department are working together.

“Contraband not only affects our local producers and the economy, but also poses risks for the introduction of plant pest, animal diseases and poses food safety concerns,” BAHA noted.

BAHA warns that the following products are being produced locally; therefore, no import permits are being issued for any of these products until further notice:

Lettuce, white onions, yellow onions, purple onions, cabbage, celery, broccoli, cauliflower and potatoes

BAHA encourages all Belizean consumers to buy local and to report any suspect contraband agricultural products.
